What Is A Birth Keeper?

‘Peace on earth Begins with Birth’

Birth Keeper is a term coined by the late great, Jeannine Parvati Baker, a teacher, writer, activist and midwife.

Below I am sharing more on what the role of Birth keeper is. What it means and how it is different to the role of midwife.

A Birth Keeper is both a Birth worker and an earth keeper. 

A Birth Keeper honours the indigenous motherline teachings and cyclic earth based wisdom.

A Birth keeper upmost priority is to the birthing woman.

A Birth Keeper understands that the birthing woman is the TRUE expert.

A Birth Keeper is there to support a family who truly want to direct their own experience.

A Birth Keeper is not a midwife or clinical practitioner.

A birth keeper is there to…

…hold a healing space, in deepest connection and respect to you, at a soul level.

She will support, sit with you, accompany you, and love you, through the continuum of Pregnancy, Birth, Post Birth and into Motherhood.

She is a mentor, and she can guide if needed. She may not know every statistical fact, she won’t know every medical paper AND she will know where to find that the information that is needed from non biased source, to support informed choice and understanding.

She is a source of rich information and knows when information is relevant and needed.

She is a keeper of holistic wisdom teachings and earth based practices in birth. 

She trusts in women their bodies and their babies and respects the exquisite unfolding of birth. 

She does not need to ‘know’ everything, every fact, figure, or measurement, she witnesses AND she will respond instinctively and receptively as needed.

She is attentive, she listens deeply and compassionately and reads the situation and the woman using her ears, eyes, touch, and 

She does not belong to any organisation or institution, therefore she is not bound by any indoctrinated or hierarchical rules or regulations.

She is not there to manage you or interfere. She is there to love you, mind you and serve you, so you can stand in your autonomy and power.

A Birth Keeper is for a family who want to direct their own experience. The mother and the partner have instinctual responses and want to direct their own birth.

A Birth Keeper is mystically intelligent. They know the art of non-interference and allow the parents to unfold their births in a way that is authentic for them.

A Birth Keeper who is deeply connected, listens compassionately, responds attentively when required, can accompany women, hold space and does not interfere with the instinctual responses to birth.

A Birth Keeper is in service to the birthing woman.

A Birth Keeper knows The Woman is the Expert.

This is a Birth Keeper.
